R U OK? Day 2022

A conversation could change a life.

Traffic Diversions Group acknowledges that promoting mental health can help individuals and communities thrive and that it can also prevent mental ill-health. Unfortunately, mental ill-health is common in Australia, with one in five (20%) Australians aged 16-85 experiencing a mental illness in any one year, with the most common mental illnesses related to depression, anxiety, and substance use. Of the 20% of Australians with a mental illness in any one year, 11.5% have one disorder and 8.5% have two or more disorders. Almost half (45%) of all Australians will experience a mental illness at some point in their lifetime.

The aim of R U OK? Day is to engage people to connect with others in the community they may have concerns about, encouraging them to seek further help and to follow up to ensure support is provided. R U OK? Day encourages responsible discussion of social inclusion and its negative consequences such as suicide, so take a few minutes out of your day to spark up a conversation with a colleague or phone a family member or a friend to simply ask them the question, “ R U OK? ”. It could mean more than you think!

Traffic Diversions Group have created a R U OK? Conversation eLearning Guide which has been distributed to all of our employees to assist with knowing when to ask “are you OK?”, how to prepare for the conversation and what to do if there is concerns about someone’s immediate safety.
