NAIDOC Week - Interview with Matthew

NAIDOC Week is a time to reflect and celebrate the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, like Matthew Hancock who has been with Traffic Diversions Group (TDG) for two years and is certainly an emerging leader within the business. Matty initially completed his training with Civil Training Australia (CTA) and has been working with TDG ever since, including across many of our major projects.

After catching up with Matty this week, see what he has to say about his journey with TDG;

How have your experiences been with CTA and TDG?

They’ve been really good. It’s been a long voyage and I’ve been here a long while and I’m proud to be a future leader, not only at TDG but as an Indigenous traffic controller (TC). As an Indigenous person, I’m stoked to still be here after such a long time.

What have you achieved since working for TDG?

I started from the bottom and I’ve pretty much been doing team leader shifts now and will continue my team leader training. I’m currently really enjoying it and I get along with pretty much everyone and I smile when I come to work. You can have a laugh but when it’s down to business, it’s down to business. When I first started at TDG, I only had a Holden Cruze but I now have worked hard and have a GTI Golf.

What do you like most about working with TDG?

You have helped me so much both inside of work and outside of work. It’s been really good. I moved down here from Darwin. They’re pretty much my family down here. It’s just deadly to look at myself, where I was 3 years ago and look at myself now. It’s great to be included on these projects.

Do you have anything further you would like to add?

If you get handed an opportunity, whether your Indigenous or non-Indigenous, and you’re sitting back thinking about giving it a go, just do it. You will look back and think WOW, look what I’ve got!

TDG would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge Matty’s contribution over the years and are extremely appreciative of his efforts.
